The Wrong Book

Short synopsis

This is the story of Rona, a 35-year-old woman on maternity leave. Rona has a day job – she is in charge of social media in a non-profit organization – but she also has a dream: to become a famous writer. So far, she only published four stories; but one of those stories won the second prize in a prestigious writing competition. She even got one fan mail; the man who wrote it is now her husband.

The only trouble is, ever since the story was published, she never wrote anything else. She’s a slow writer, and no idea seems good enough. She’s now working on a novel, but this doesn’t come along very well, to say the least.

While on maternity leave, Rona meets a new mom-friend from the neighborhood, and the two of them become close. This friend is a huge reader of romantic-erotic novels, and when Rona complains that ever since the baby was born, she cannot bring herself to read anything worthwhile, she eventually convinces Rona to try to read some romance.

Bit by bit, Rona gets drawn in. And when there’s an online competition – whoever writes the best opening segment for a romantic novel wins – she tries her luck under an alias. She is, after all, a serious writer; this is all just for the fun of it.

Rona wins the competition, and soon she’s approached by the publisher promoting the competition: Is this paragraph part of something bigger? Does she have a romantic novel, just waiting to be published? If not, does she maybe want to write one?

Does she?

Rona writes a romantic-erotic novel, which becomes a huge hit. The only thing is, she does it all under an alias, and behind her husband’s back. He doesn’t know that she attended the competition, he doesn’t know that she won; He doesn’t know that she wrote and published a romantic-erotic novel; He doesn’t know that she is the person behind the most talked-about romantic novel ever, and the answer to the most intriguing, heated question around: who wrote this?

Why doesn’t she tell him? Gidi is a professor of Archeology, a highbrow putz that despises everything, even books that are considered masterpieces. He believes that fine taste and good literature are now under attack, pushed aside by shallow best-sellers pretending to be art. You can imagine how he feels about romantic novels.

Gidi does adore Rona: he fell in love with her after reading her winning story, and he’s positive she is about to become a great writer. He arranges a nice study for her to work in; he takes the baby out, for her to have some quiet writing time; he keeps quiet while she’s writing what he believes to be the next great novel of the 21st century. How will he react when he finds out that this was all used to write an erotic novel – about a young sexy archeologist, no less?

The Wrong Book is a brilliant, funny, surprising and moving novel about everything that is interesting: about contemporary relationships and the secrets we hide; about our right to change in front of the people we love; about choosing our identity, and coming to terms with who we are. It’s a novel about the fascinating world of romantic novels – the number one selling genre in the world today; and the way it changes the world and the women who read – and write – it. It’s a novel about being a woman; It’s a novel about being a human being.
